The desire of book owners to somehow mark the written or printed works in their possession can practically be considered as old as the existence of books themselves. Even in the earliest times, it was common for the owner of a book to write or inscribe their name, initials, or coat of arms on a page or even on the cover. Later on, in addition to handwritten notes, embossing techniques appeared, followed by the spread of engravings made using various methods.
